Robert has a wealth of legal and commercial experience from over 35 years’ involvement in all aspects of the property and construction industry. He acts as a party representative whilst undertaking appointments as arbitrator, adjudicator, expert determiner, mediator and dispute board member.
His work as a neutral dispute resolver has involved him in cases in the UK and internationally as sole decision maker and as part of a panel of two or three members while acting as Counsel in litigation and arbitration (both domestically and internationally).
Types of disputes include claims for professional negligence, property, landlord & tenant, delay analysis, costs, variations, defects, interpretation of contracts, repudiation, and other aspects of contract in the areas of building, civil engineering, mechanical & electrical, waste water treatment and process engineering as well as property related issues.
Robert has substantial knowledge and experience of the contracting and dispute processes within the UAE, Africa and Far East (Singapore, Hong Kong and Malaysia). His role as a neutral has taken him across the world including the Middle East, USA, Caribbean, Europe and Cyprus.
Robert’s work as an expert determiner has included final account, cost and variation disputes for projects including hospitals, office developments along with mechanical & electrical services, civil engineering, development agreements and partnership agreements.
In mediation Robert has acted as party representative as well as Mediator in a range of matters including construction, professional negligence, contract, development agreements and landlord & tenant.
Robert is a qualified dispute board member and has a thorough knowledge of the FIDIC and ICC provisions and is a professional member of the Dispute Board Federation. Robert has been appointed by FIDIC and undertakes dispute board appointments throughout the world in the areas of construction, engineering, wastewater and process engineering.
Robert provides training, seminars and undertakes assessments on international and domestic arbitration, mediation as well as adjudication on behalf of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators both in the UK and overseas and is a regular speaker at various seminars and conferences on all aspects of alternative dispute resolution.
Robert joined a law firm in Dubai in 2018 as a Senior Partner in order to allow him to expand his practice as the dispute resolver and client representative in the Middle East and Asia whilst maintaining a presence in the UK. At the end of 2019 Robert was honored to be invited to join ArbDB Chambers joining a group of leading dispute resolvers from a wide range of backgrounds and experience.
Robert has been admitted to the arbitrator and mediator rosters and panels of several prestigious appointing bodies including the Saudi Centre for Commercial Arbitration, Hong Kong International Arbitration Centre, Kuala Lumpur Regional Centre for Arbitration, Asian Institute of Alternative Dispute Resolution and Sharjah International Commercial Arbitration Centre, and has also been appointed by DIFC-LCIA, ICC, RICS and CIArb.
